History was made at ANS Finland on Thursday 1 February 2018 when the EFKT air traffic control deployed the ANS monitoring service, in other words the so-called radar tower service.

Petrus Timonen, Director of Kittilä air traffic control, was the first to report “Radar contact” at 09:14 a.m. UTC upon the arrival of Transavian flight (KS-KT) TRA735.

The deployed service will make the work of air traffic control easier and facilitate the coordination requirements of area control services. This will be reflected to our customers as reduced separation minima and increased capacity.

“The deployment of the service has taken some time as the systems and equipment have been installed and approved by the authorities and the air traffic controllers have completed radar courses and obtained radar qualifications. We would like to thank everyone involved in the planning, training and approval process,” says Pekka Olanterä from Operative Production Control at ANS Finland.

All the air traffic controllers at Kittilä have completed the transition training and they will proceed with the ATS monitoring service as of 1 February 2018.

In addition to Kittilä, the radar tower service has been deployed at the network airports of Pori, Vaasa, Mariehamn and Oulu. Next, the radar tower service will be implemented at the Kokkola-Pietarsaari airport.
